“For consider your calling, brothers and sisters, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the insignificant things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that he may nullify the things that are, so that no human may boast before God.”
—1 Corinthians 1:26–29
Do you ever feel foolish? Wish you were smarter? Worry that your lack of money, fame, power, or good health keeps you from doing anything worthwhile?
No need.
God chose us, knowing all our insecurities, flaws, and everything we lack. He esteems the poor (Psalm 113:7). He loves the downtrodden (Isaiah 61:1). His heart is for the powerless (Psalm 9:9). Through him, our weaknesses become strength: “He has said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.’” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
When we know we’re weak, we submit, obey, and our hearts are transformed; therefore, Christ can work through us. We’re no longer tempted to do things our own way.
When our weaknesses leave us feeling defeated and insecure, let’s remember that God’s kingdom does not work like our earthly kingdoms. The last shall be first (Matthew 20:16). If we want to be great, we must be servants (Mark 10:43).
Rather than letting our weaknesses drag us down, we can take them to Christ so he can use his mighty power to work in and through all our insufficiencies.
