“You there! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you who have no money come, buy and eat. Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy?”
—Isaiah 55:1–2
Jesus said this again in John 6:27: “Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that lasts for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.” The crowds asked him what kind of work they need to do to receive this enduring food, and he answered, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent” (John 6:29).
We don’t have to buy the bread of life and living water. We only have to believe . . . but this belief is not a simple acknowledgement, for “the demons also believe, and shudder” (James 2:19).
Jesus is talking about the kind of belief that affects your life.
Like Noah: “By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household” (Hebrews 11:7).
Like Abraham: “By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he left, not knowing where he was going” (Hebrews 11:8).
Noah and Abraham followed God into the unknown because they believed him.
That’s the kind of belief Jesus is talking about.
Truly believing God will result in following his direction, and following his direction will lead to the nourishment that satisfies our hungry souls.
