“The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it is coming from and where it is going; so is everyone who has been born of the Spirit.”

—John 3:8

The world prescribes a formula for our lives. It’s the commonsense equation that everyone thinks “works.” If you do “A” and then “B,” you will get “C.”

And “C” usually equals (we hope) a predictable, comfortable existence in this life.

But is that what we’re called to as Christians? To follow the world’s formula and hope it works?

This verse reminds us that God has more for us than a worldly plan and a predictable life.

He wants us to follow him, and like Abraham, that sometimes means we will go out with no idea where we’re headed (Hebrews 11:8).

If God has been calling us in a direction that seems scary or risky, and we’ve been hedging, it’s time to listen. If we’re impulsive by nature, we need to spend enough time in prayer to know this is not just our own next harebrained schemes. We run it by some trusted Christian advisors. But we test even their advice to determine whether they are operating under worldly mindsets, simply telling us what we want to hear, or could be influenced by their own fear of the unknown rather than helping us hear the Holy Spirit.

We operate our lives based on obedience to Christ rather than worldly wisdom.

God’s path might have us living a life that is not predictable or comfortable, but it will be more full of kingdom purpose than we ever could’ve dreamed.
