“But Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart.”
—Luke 2:19
Mary was given the incredible gift and responsibility of bearing and mothering the Son of God.
She could’ve thought, “God gave me this task; it’s my job to get the word out. I’ve got to give Jesus a good start for his ministry.”
If she’d lived in today’s society, people would’ve been pressuring her to create social media accounts, build up a following, get an audience, and make sure everybody knew about this big thing happening in the kingdom of God.
But Mary simply submitted to the Lord’s will, treasured the message, and privately pondered the task she’d been given.
God didn’t need her publicity; he only needed her obedience.
If the Lord has given us something to do, we may start adding a lot of other tasks he hasn’t asked of us. Others may make us feel like we can’t fulfill God’s calling unless we do all these other things as well.
But maybe those things aren’t part of our calling, and they’ll simply leave us bogged down, discouraged, and drained.
We can be encouraged that it’s enough to simply be obedient, treasure the calling God’s given us, ponder what happens in our hearts, and leave the rest to God.
Let’s make sure we’re attentive to what the Lord has for us and not all the extra tasks the world may pile on top of it. The Lord will complete the work he begins in us.
