“As having nothing and yet possessing all things.”
—2 Corinthians 6:10
This is the beauty of the Christian life. Anything wonderful we have in this earthly life is a bonus, but not a necessity, to our joy.
As Christians, we have everything that matters: a redeemed soul, an eternal and certain hope, the Holy Spirit as comforter and guide, and eternal truths in the Word about how to live now in fulfillment, joy, peace, purpose, and to the glory of God.
He’s given us all our soul needs in this life, and that can’t be taken away (Luke 10:41–42). Any good things we gain in this physical world should be held loosely; they can all be taken away, and our hearts should not be dependent upon them.
We can possess those temporary things, but our souls can live in the same peace and hope whether we do or not.
We can live in contentment even in our lack because we know that eternity has more and better things than we could ever imagine (1 Corinthians 2:9).
We don’t have to live like the world does—scrabbling and clawing to gain and hold what we have here. We can lose our earthly possessions yet continue living at rest in the confidence of our eternal inheritance, looking forward to a better land (Hebrews 11:16) and knowing our real life begins when this one ends.
Whatever we do or don’t have in this world, we can live as if we possess all things because all that truly matters can’t be taken away from us, and all the trials we have on this earth will not even be a blip in our infinite joy.
