“Will the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you doing?’ Or the thing you are making say, ‘He has no hands’?”

—Isaiah 45:9

God is always working on us, forming us into a vessel fit for the works he’s prepared for us. That process never ends. Sometimes we look at ourselves and can’t tell what he’s making. It looks formless and even useless.

Like a jar without handles, we think we are missing some important component. How could we be of use when we’re lacking in this way?

Or we may think we know what God has designed us for, and decide, based on that, that he has made a mistake . . . or several. This misshapen vessel we’ve become with its strange divots and cracked edges isn’t fit for the role we imagined.

But we don’t know the purpose for which God is crafting us. Perhaps we need to fit somewhere handles would only get in the way. Perhaps the very thing we think we need is something that would take us further away from the Lord and make us unsuited to the work he has for us to do.

When we can’t see the good in the vessel God has created, our job is to continue living faithfully and waiting for the revelation that reveals our function in the body of Christ and the kingdom of God.

We can trust that he is molding us into the exact vessel needed for a purpose crafted specifically for each of us. He will reveal that purpose in time, and it will take into account all of the things we are and all of the things we are not.
