“The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and my cup; you support my lot. The measuring lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, my inheritance is beautiful to me.”

—Psalm 16:5–6

We must choose our portion, the thing that sustains us day–by–day and moment–by–moment.

When we choose the Lord as our sustenance, the omniscient, unchangeable God who loves us infinitely holds our future and all that comes with it. With that future, our inheritance is sure.

When we choose other things, we attempt to take our provision out of the Lord’s hands and put it into our own; yet we are finite, fickle creatures who can’t see the big picture and usually don’t know what’s best. The sustenance the world provides changes at every whim of man or breath of circumstance; it brings no guarantees and any inheritance we do get will certainly not be eternal.

Only when we choose the Lord will our portion, our lot, and our inheritance be beautiful, pleasant, and certain. Only this inheritance cannot be stolen, destroyed, or damaged (Matthew 6:19).

Our hope is not the blind hope of shallow optimism that believes everything along the way will be fine. It’s the eternal hope assured by knowing someone trustworthy has prepared something better for us (Hebrews 11:16) and is guiding us home. The journey may be tough, but as we follow our Lord, we can know the destination is sure, and the inheritance will all be worth it.
