“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
—2 Corinthians 5:7
If we follow the idea of walking by faith instead of by sight to its natural conclusion, it reveals that some of the things we do by faith won’t look like good decisions according to “sight.”
And if we’re supposed to trust the Lord rather than lean on our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5), we can conclude that our understanding might often lead us astray.
We spend a lot of time doing what our sight and understanding would tell us is the “smart” thing. But the smart thing is not always the wise thing, and the wise thing may look foolish to the rest of the world (1 Corinthians 1:27–29).
When we look to the world to find out if we’re doing the right things, we’re inevitably going to get the wrong answer.
We may be walking further and further from God’s will while the world cheers us on and tells us how wonderful we’re doing. And when we’re following the path the Lord has for us, the world may call us failures.
The only true direction and peace we will find on this life’s journey is to walk by faith and not be distracted by what our sight and understanding says based on our own limited knowledge.
We only have to look at the people in the Bible to see that much of what God asked of them didn’t make sense in the natural world.
We shouldn’t be surprised if God calls us outside the realm of the ordinary. We can follow him confidently, knowing he will lead every step of the way.
