“For the Lord has rejected those in whom you trust, and you will not prosper with them.”
—Jeremiah 2:37
In whom—or what—do we trust?
That person might solve a problem in the moment, and that thing might temporarily satisfy a craving, but we will not prosper with them in the end.
Satan will tempt us to put our trust in the things of this world, whether in institutions (Psalm 146:3–4), other people (Psalm 118:8–9), ourselves (Proverbs 3:5–6), or things (Psalm 20:7). He tries to convince us that God isn’t really going to take care of us, so we must find someone or something who will.
The enemy promised Eve knowledge, and she got it, but it was not the knowledge that prospers. The devil may promise us pleasure or wealth or success, and we may get it for a season (Hebrews 11:25), but it will always be knowledge, pleasure, wealth, or success that destroys rather than prospers.
Trusting in the Lord isn’t always easy, and it doesn’t necessarily lead to ease or comfort in this life, but he is the only trustworthy object that will always, always prosper and not harm us in all the ways that matter (Jeremiah 29:11).
May we see Satan’s deception for what it is: an attempt to destroy each of us and our identity as sons and daughters.
God has given us beauty, freedom, and purpose forever. Forever begins now as we trust in him instead of our own ways, other people, or other things.
