“Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.”
—Luke 5:4
Jesus told Simon Peter—a fisherman—how to fish. Peter had been fishing all night and come up empty, but when Jesus told him to do it again, he obeyed.
Perhaps we’ve been doing something—even a thing we’re educated in and know we are doing the “right” way—without getting the return we’d hoped for.
But sometimes we’re doing what we do all in our own strength. Sometimes it’s not until we’ve given up and called it a night that we get to see God work.
Maybe we’ve given up but then heard the Lord say, “Not yet; go out one more time . . . out into the deep.”
It takes effort and time to go out into the deep. We’re often tired. We’ve been “fishing” for a long time with no results.
It is all too easy to say, “I’ve done my duty, Lord. I’m calling it quits.”
But if Jesus calls us to go back out, we should never hesitate, but rather answer like Peter does, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as you say and let down the nets” (Luke 5:5).
“OK, Lord . . . I don’t understand, but I’ll do it because you said so.” He gives us his Word for a purpose, and it will not return void (Isaiah 55:11).
Going out into the deep requires pushing through our own failure, exhaustion, and disappointment, but it’s always worth it when the Lord calls us there.
