“If I say, ‘Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, and the light around me will be night,’ even darkness is not dark to you, and the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to you.”
—Psalm 139:11–12
Sometimes it feels like we’re walking in the dark. We don’t know where we’re going, and the world feels hopeless. It looks like the darkness has won.
If we’re looking at our circumstances, that might seem true. There may be no earthly way out, as there was no way for the Israelites to cross through the sea, no way for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to survive the fiery furnace, no way for Abraham and Sarah to have a child, and no hope when Jesus died.
But when we look at the Lord’s work in those and other circumstances, we can see that there was still a way, even when death was sure and all earthly hope was lost.
He is the God “who makes a way through the sea and a path through the mighty waters” (Isaiah 43:16).
We look to the hand of the Lord. If it seems he is slow to respond, we keep praying, seeking, asking, and knocking (Luke 11:9–13). He will not fail to send the good gift of the Holy Spirit to guide us.
When we find ourselves in the dark unable to see the way, we operate by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). We can be unconcerned when our sight does not show us the way, knowing that the Lord can see where we cannot. The dark is not dark to him. It’s as bright as the noonday sun.
