“Every place on which the sole of your foot steps, I have given it to you, just as I spoke to Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon, even as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and as far as the Great Sea toward the setting of the sun will be your territory.”

—Joshua 1:3–4

The Lord promised that all this land would be the Israelites’ if they simply walked the ground and claimed it—but they never claimed it in its entirety. They left a large portion of it empty and never trod it with the soles of their feet.

We do the same thing. The Lord gives each of us something here in this life that is set apart for us—specific good works (Ephesians 2:10) and a specific path for each of us to walk (1 Corinthians 7:17)—but for it to become part of our lives and legacies, we must walk in his path and heed his direction. There are some promises in the Bible that belong to every believer, but there are many more that require action and obedience before they come to fruition in our lives. We must tread the ground to claim the promise.

The obstacle might be fear, time, distraction, or laziness, but we need to persevere in spite of that in order to start walking in the fullness of all God has planned for and promised us.

How many good works do we leave undone and promises do we leave unclaimed because we haven’t stepped out?
