“But Moses said to God, ‘Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?’”
—Exodus 3:11
When Moses was favored in Egypt, he wanted to free the Israelite slaves. He believed he had the skills, power, and position to do so, and he relied on those abilities. But his anger and pride led him to do it his way in his time, and he had to flee Egypt, leaving his people enslaved.
Moses spent the next forty years as a shepherd, probably feeling like he’d wrecked that task and lost the chance to save his people.
But after all those years, God reminded him of the true calling he’d recognized as a young man.
This time, Moses wasn’t arrogantly deciding how to do it by worldly means. His response to God’s call now was, “Who am I? Why would you want me? I don’t have what it takes.”
In his humility, he was finally ready to follow God’s lead.
Most of us have times we feel like we’ve failed in our lives and in our service to God. We tried and just made a big mess of it.
But perhaps, like Moses, this season is working a humility in us that we need for our own good and for the kingdom of God. Even if it seems like we had all the earthly advantages and lost them through poor decisions, our only concern should be to get back up and follow the Lord once more; he never needed our power—only our obedience.
May we always seek God’s purpose, wait on his guidance, and ask, “Who am I?” each step of the way, directing all the glory to our Lord.
