“Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, and which have not entered the human heart, all that God has prepared for those who love him.”

—1 Corinthians 2:9

None of us can truly comprehend heaven or eternity. We can’t understand how amazing and wonderful it will be, nor grasp the fathoms of infinity.

But though we can’t understand it fully, if we don’t find the idea of eternity with Christ motivating or helpful to our Christian walk, it’s time to change that.

The Bible tells us over and over that our hope doesn’t lie in this world, and this word “hope” is synonymous with waiting and expectation (Psalm 62:5–6; Psalm 40:1; Psalm 33:20 . . . the list could go on). All of this is temporary and fading away (Isaiah 40:7–8; 2 Corinthians 4:18).

Since everything the Bible says to hope in is eternal, if we don’t have an understanding of eternity, we don’t have a firm grasp on our hope.

If what God is preparing for us is so wonderful that ideas of it have not even entered the human heart, can you imagine its grandeur and how quickly it will wipe away all our earthly sorrows?

Paul writes that our earthly troubles won’t even tip the scales against the weight of glory we will experience there. He isn’t downplaying the suffering; he’s expressing the immense wonder of heaven! The sorrow won’t even rate as anything that matters to us anymore. Indeed, the “light and momentary affliction” here is helping produce the glory there (2 Corinthians 4:17).

If our understanding of eternity is dim, let’s spend some time learning about it and why it should be a beautiful light that spurs us on when we’re feeling defeated by this world.
