“Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life.”
—Proverbs 4:23
Sometimes we miss the point; we forget that our hearts should be flowing with life (John 7:38).
While we do need to put our faith into action (James 2:14–17), many of us try to “act right” but never get around to working on our hearts. We might look okay on the outside, but inside, we’re hurting, exhausted, irritated, overwhelmed, anxious, and lonely.
God cares about our hearts. He wants them flowing with the springs of life. If we are empty, flowing with disappointment, bitterness, and anger, we need to take time for healing that. We need to sit with the Lord like Mary did (Luke 10:39), to rest from our strivings, recognize the lies that are controlling our thoughts and feelings, and battle against them in a spiritual war for our hearts. We must learn the biblical truths that counteract those lies so we have ammunition against them.
As we do these things, eventually, the springs of life will begin to flow more freely. Jesus is the source of those springs, and the more we draw near to him and he draws near to us (James 4:8–10), the quieter the thoughts, feelings, and words of death will grow. We’ll never totally get there in this life, but learning who the Lord is and who we are in him will take us further and further along that path.
Spend time healing your heart. The world needs our hearts springing with life, not only our hands doing good works out of duty and obligation.
