“Therefore be patient, brothers and sisters, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil, being patient about it, until it gets the early and late rains.”
—James 5:7
The verses just prior to these are speaking of evil men taking advantage of, cheating, oppressing, and murdering righteous men.
This is to be our attitude when faced with such men—patience like the patience of the farmer who plants and trusts that the Lord will bring the rain and, even when it looks impossible, a nourishing and fruitful harvest.
A bit further on, James 5:11 compares this type of patience to the patience of Job in his suffering: “We count those blessed who endured. You have heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord’s dealings, that the Lord is full of compassion and is merciful.”
Imagine if the farmer didn’t trust that planting would eventually bring a good result. Would anyone ever persevere through the months of difficult toil and tending, pests and storms, if they didn’t believe something nourishing would come from it?
We must have this kind of hope and patience if we’re to endure the hardships and sufferings of this life. The Lord can use even those difficulties to plant something in us, in others, and in the Lord’s kingdom; we can trust that his watering Holy Spirit will bring forth good fruit.
The Lord blesses those who endure even when they don’t see how the fruit will come. He has compassion and mercy on them. He sees the difficulty and the pain. He hears the cries of the laborers (James 5:4).
Our trouble is a seed being planted, and God will not neglect to water and bring the harvest.
