“A precious cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed. The one who believes in it will not be disturbed.”

—Isaiah 28:16

That word “disturbed” literally means “in a hurry” or “make haste.”

As we read about the life of Jesus, it seems he was never in a hurry . . . never stressed about how quickly he got to the next place.

He was calm and diligent, but not hasty, anxious, nor constantly concerned about getting to the next thing on the list. It’s following this example that leads to peace, confidence, and the work of the Holy Spirit.

We don’t have to worry about getting enough done; we simply trust God to give us the time needed to do the things he has for us.

He doesn’t want us frantically completing one task before rushing on to the next. He wants us present, settled, and confident in him.

The fruit of hurry is almost always frustration, irritability, stress, anger, sloppy work, and distraction. The list could go on.

It’s doubtful if hurrying has ever made us more Christlike or brought out the fruits of the Spirit.

When our lives are full of this kind of hurry, we can know there is a misplaced priority somewhere. We’re either committed to tasks the Lord never asked of us, or we’re not trusting him to guide us in the work he’s given.

If our lives are a whirlwind of hurry, we should take some time and ask God to show us how to change either our responsibilities or our attitudes so that we can be fully in his presence, present for those around us, and available when others need us.
