“Your ears will hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ whenever you turn to the right or to the left.”

—Isaiah 30:21

Sometimes when we talk about turning to God with every decision, people say things like, “But what about free will? Doesn’t God allow us to make our own choices?”

The answer is, “Absolutely.” We can always refuse God’s path, and he also gives us great freedom within his will.

Much of God’s guidance comes not with specific direction—“This is the career you must pursue”—but with nudges to grow spiritually—“This customer service interaction is where you can grow in the Spirit by denying yourself and your right to respond in un–Christlike ways even though you’ve been wronged.”

Our character is more important than the jobs we work.

But the fact remains that we serve an infinite, omnipotent God who knows every winding step our lives will take. Why would we not want to include him in all our day–to–day decisions?

It’s not about control; it’s about inviting him into our journey and trusting that he is guiding us every step of the way.

We’re often uncertain, and we might live in that uncertainty for a time, but God always has a reason for our waiting. The uncertainty often leads us to things we didn’t even know to look for.

So if we’ve been asking, “Which way, Lord?”, and not getting an answer, we can trust that he wants us to keep seeking him in that.

The answer will come, and in the meantime, he’s leading us to grow deeper in our relationship with him. The more closely we’re following him, the better we can hear his voice and recognize the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
