“The good person out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil person out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.”

—Luke 6:45

If our heart–treasure is good, it will produce more good. If our heart–treasure is evil or vain, it will produce more evil and vanity.

Is reputation our treasure? First Samuel 16:7 says that man looks at the outer appearance, but God looks at the heart.

Is financial gain our treasure? First Timothy 6:10 says that the love of money is the root of evil and Matthew 19:24–26 tells us it’s easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God, though all things are possible through Christ.

Is safety our treasure? Matthew 10:28 says not to fear those who can harm the body, but rather fear him who has power over the soul and the body.

Is ease our treasure? John 16:33 says that in this world we will have trouble, but that Christ has overcome the world, and Romans 5:3–5 tells us we can rejoice in our sufferings knowing they produce godliness, perseverance, and hope in us.

Our only real treasure is Christ and eternity in his kingdom with him—the pearl of great price worth selling all other treasure to gain (Matthew 13:45–46). His treasure will see us overflowing with the fountain of living water, and there is no bottom to that fountain.

We should take great care to evaluate our treasures and what they are bringing forth in us and through us.
