“Then Moses said to the Lord, ‘Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither recently nor in time past, nor since you have spoken to your servant; for I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.’ But the Lord said to him, ‘Who has made the human mouth? Or who makes anyone unable to speak or deaf, or able to see or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now then go, and I myself will be with your mouth, and instruct you in what you are to say.’ But he said, ‘Please, Lord, now send the message by whomever you will.’”
—Exodus 4:10–13
By “whomever you will,” Moses actually meant, “. . . whomever you will except me.” In modern terms, he was saying, “Please send someone else!”
This came from his insecurity.
We know our own faults—that we’re weak and fallible people—and we generally know what talents we have or don’t have.
But we’ve seen God’s power, and if we believe the Bible, we should know that he is capable; yet somehow, we think he cannot overcome our own weaknesses.
Sure, he can turn a stick into a snake and part the sea . . . but our inability to speak well? That’s surely too much for him!
But he created us; he knows all about our limitations, and he’s not worried about whether we’re capable or not. He just wants our willingness. If God can overcome even the finality of death, our inabilities and weaknesses are no impediment to him. He can work through us just as he sees fit no matter how capable or incapable we are.
God lets us be a part of what he’s doing not because of our skills and abilities, but because of our obedience.
