“There is one who scatters, and yet increases all the more, and there is one who withholds what is justly due, and yet it results only in poverty. A generous person will be prosperous, and one who gives others plenty of water will himself be given plenty.”

—Proverbs 11:24–25

We often hoard our time, money, effort, comfort, or possessions, fearing that if we give too much, there won’t be enough left for us.

God says that’s not how it works. In his economy, if we withhold what we should give, we will be in want. If we water others where the Lord directs, we will be watered.

2 Corinthians 8:15 says it again, “The one who had gathered much did not have too much, and the one who had gathered little did not have too little.”

We see this play out with the widow in 1 Kings 17:7–16 who fed Elijah from the last of her flour and oil, yet never ran out.

People will tell us we must limit our giving sensibly according to our worldly wisdom, but Jesus praised yet another widow for giving everything she had to live on (Mark 12:41–44).

So next time the Lord puts a need in front of us, let’s not fear meeting it as he leads with whatever earthly resource we have, even if it feels like that resource is already stretched to its capacity.

God’s resources aren’t limited, and if he asks it of us, we can trust him with it.
