“Do not be afraid, for those who are with us are greater than those who are with them.”
—2 Kings 6:16
The king of Syria had sent a great army to kill the prophet Elisha, surrounding the city with horses and chariots. While Elisha knew there was more to the battle than what they could see with their human eyes, his servant was afraid.
Elisha prayed, and God opened the servant’s eyes; he saw that the Lord’s army, “full of horses and chariots of fire,” was protecting them.
Sometimes we look at our circumstances with human eyes instead of eyes of faith. Things seem impossible, and with only our earthly resources, they would be.
Elisha didn’t have the power to overcome those armies, the Israelites didn’t have the strength to challenge Pharaoh, and we don’t have the ability to save ourselves from sin.
But God and his armies are always greater than whatever or whoever is coming against us. We can’t always see what he’s doing, but as it says in Exodus 14:14, we can be sure that “the Lord will fight for you, while you keep silent.”
We don’t have to depend on earthly advantages or abilities. “Some praise their chariots and some their horses, but we will praise the name of the Lord, our God” (Psalm 20:7).
Whether our spiritual eyes are opened to what’s going on around us or not, let our confidence always be in the Lord’s faithfulness.
The problem may be big, but our God is bigger.
