“Blessed are those who hear the word of God and follow it.”

—Luke 11:28

We short–change the building of our faith when we don’t obey Christ and the Word even when we don’t like or understand it.

Logically, it made no sense for Jesus to tell Peter to go back out and try again though he’d been fishing all night with nothing to show for it (Luke 5:4–6). It would’ve been easy for him to think Jesus was just cheering him on (and was ignorant of fishing) or to think Jesus was being hard on him. He’d been fishing all night and was surely ready for a break. But Peter obeyed, and the result was not only a lot of fish, but a confidence that Jesus’s words were trustworthy.

When we prove God’s Word in our lives by obeying it, it strengthens not only our own faith, but that of those around us.

If Peter had not cast his nets again, he might’ve wondered for years why Jesus had told him to do so. Only through obedience did he begin to see the divine power of Christ and have his faith built because of it.

Perhaps, instead of obeying like Peter did, we spend a lot of time contemplating the nice things Jesus says. Or we might believe he’s being too hard on us by asking us to keep going in the face of failure or hardship.

But when we take steps of obedience, we actually see that his words are true and purposeful. The more we see that, the easier obedience becomes.
