“Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.”
—Galatians 6:2
If we’re going to bear one another’s burdens, we must be in relationship with others so we can see even those burdens that hide in the shadows.
Some may have the burden of sins they have not yet overcome or of difficult relationships. Some have financial burdens or not enough time. Some may be weighed down by the demands of an unreasonable boss, old wounds from those who should’ve protected them, or grief from loss or unrealized hopes.
How can we help lift these burdens? We can pray and offer our time or money. Cook a meal or mow a yard. Send a message to check in on someone when they come to mind or ask them to coffee or lunch. We can simply look for ways to help, be a listening ear, and be present in their lives. It doesn’t have to be complicated. We don’t have to have super–strength or special talents to help bear one another’s burdens. We just have to be willing, intentional, and available.
Through bearing others’ burdens, we enrich our own lives of community and build the body of Christ. But this is also our duty as believers because, “By this all people will know that you are my disciples: if you have love for one another” (John 13:35).
This is the evidence to the world that we are Jesus’s disciples and how we fulfill the law of Christ. We live out his purposes in and through us—continuing his work of bringing good news to the poor, proclaiming release to captives, bringing sight to the blind, and setting free those who are oppressed (Luke 4:18).
