“For the customs of the peoples are futile; for it is wood cut from the forest, the work of the hands of a craftsman with a cutting tool.”
—Jeremiah 10:3
We rarely see people building and worshipping actual idols in our culture, but the customs of the world are still futile, and the principles stand. Man crafts an idol with his own hands, then turns around and worships it as if it has some special power. We still do this.
We work hard to build an image of ourselves with wealth, success, or power, then turn around and bow to those things as our protectors, believing they will keep trouble away.
But they won’t; they can’t. They can be tools and blessings, but they are not gods. They are creations of our own hands and have no power. Our earthly kingdom can crumble at any second regardless of our best efforts at building a safety net; only our relationship with the Lord and our eternal inheritance can be guaranteed. He is our rock and fortress, savior and refuge, our shield and stronghold (Psalm 18:2).
Instead of building a kingdom on the sinking sand of our own handiwork, we can live for things that will not end in futility—building the eternal, unshakeable kingdom by following the Lord’s leading, making disciples, and living a life full of the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self–control.
Following him is the only path to meaning and anything lasting.
