“And he has said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.’ Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.”

—2 Corinthians 12:9

When we’re confronted with hardship and difficulty, when we come face to face with our enemies, and when we know that our skills are not enough for the Lord’s work, we can rest on this verse.

We can practice, learn, and become better at some things, and we can always turn to the Lord for protection and provision, but externally, we’ll never have everything the world tells us we need to succeed at God’s work or be all the world tells us we should be.

That’s okay. Where we lack is where God’s power shines. We don’t have to be good at that thing; our inabilities don’t mean God can’t work through us. We don’t have to be concerned at the obstacles in our way; God will make a way where there is no way. If it’s a task God’s given us to do, we can trust that our weakness allows him to work all the more for his kingdom.

We can, in fact, boast in our weaknesses (2 Corinthians 12:9): “Look how God worked despite my ineptitude, lack of knowledge, and all the people coming against his work. Clearly, this work was done through his power!”

So we don’t have to dread those things that shine a spotlight on our inabilities or fear those problems that seem insurmountable; we can look forward to them expectantly, trusting that God will work through our weakness.

What we do need is submission and obedience to the tasks God puts in front of us. Everything good comes through his strength.
