“Though he slay me, I will hope in him. Nevertheless I will argue my ways before him.”
—Job 13:15
This is the statement of true faith—that no matter what horror comes in this world, we will trust him.
It’s hard to think about the fact that Job is also saying, “Though he slay my children and all the servants in my household, and though he take my livelihood and my health, I will trust him.”
All of that had already happened, yet Job remained faithful. He grieved. He cried out, “Why?” He was convinced he would never see good again (Job 7:7).
But he remained faithful.
It’s okay to ask God why. It’s even okay to complain to and “argue” with him. From Job’s story, we see that we can take our hearts to God no matter what’s in them as long as in the end, we are faithful to him.
If there is something the Lord could “slay” in this life that would turn us away from him, that thing has mastery over us, and we are making our trust in him dependent upon some earthly circumstance. As long as that’s the case, our faith is fickle, because our earthly circumstances are not in our control. Life will always bring things we do not like and would not choose (1 Peter 4:12).
Let us work to defeat the things that hold mastery over our hope and faith in the Lord.
Our hope is firm only when its foundation is Christ himself alone.
