“And yet Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him and said to him, ‘Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?’ And he got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Hush, be still.’ And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm. And he said to them, ‘Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?’ They became very much afraid and said to one another, ‘Who, then, is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?’”

—Mark 4:38–41

There are many troubles in this life, but the Lord can bring us safely through them all.

Perhaps, like the disciples here, we fear when the storm comes. It looks like God isn’t paying attention, and we start to think he doesn’t care.

And perhaps, like them, we haven’t yet come to understand who this God is, and his power is more frightening than calming. Perhaps we think him untrustworthy. If we can’t yet trust him, we need to spend some time getting to know his goodness and faithfulness.

Because once we truly grasp that the infinite, all–knowing, fully loving God who made the universe is in our boat, we can relax.

We don’t have to fear. There will be storms, and there will be times when they go on longer and get worse than we’d like, but we can endure in faith knowing that in his time, he will bring us out of our distress, still the storm, hush the waves, and guide us to our desired harbor (Psalm 107:30).

When God is in the boat, our destination is never in doubt.
