“The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.”

—Psalm 145:18

I’ve heard people say they looked for God and did not find him, but many do not really call on him “in truth.”

They call on him searching for something else—comfort or ease in this life or something that makes them feel good but doesn’t really require anything of them—and when it doesn’t come in the way they want it to, they stop calling and stop seeking.

Many people want a comfortable, impersonal God who won’t disturb their lives too much rather than a personal one who is intricately involved in ordering our steps each day and who has a say in what we do or don’t do.

When Jesus came, he was rejected by the Jews because he didn’t do what people thought he would—give them earthly freedom from their Roman oppressors. He was there to give them something much greater—freedom from their own slavery to self and sin. They couldn’t see it and chose not to listen to him, because they weren’t calling on him in truth. They were calling for him to take care of their personal agendas and to make their lives what they thought they should be from a human perspective.

They didn’t want to be reminded of their personal responsibility; they just wanted the good life.

When we really search and call in truth, we will find God. But if we search and call with our own expectation of what God should be or do, we will find either nothing or—a possibility that’s even more alarming—something else.

We must call on God for his own sake.
