“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father
will send in my name, he will teach you all things,
and remind you of all that I said to you.”
—John 14:26
Many of us seem to have a lackluster or confused idea of the Holy
Spirit. In our Western mindsets, we’ve largely sanitized faith of most
things that seem supernatural.
Much of this attitude is founded upon fear. Someone could say the
Holy Spirit taught them almost anything. But this verse clearly says the
Holy Spirit will “teach us all things,” in addition to reminding us of
things we’ve learned from the Word.
Of course, we should always test things to see if they align with
Scripture. If they are contrary in any way, we can dismiss them imme-
diately, but we should not dismiss them simply because we’re afraid
they may be false. We are not to “quench the Spirit” nor to “utterly
reject prophecies,” though we are to examine them closely and only
hold on to what will bear good, godly fruit (1 Thessalonians 5:19–21).
Everything has the potential to be misused and misunderstood. Re-
moving our acceptance of the Holy Spirit’s interactive presence inside
of us has not kept people from misusing the Bible itself, including
Jesus’s words, over the centuries.
But removing our belief that the Holy Spirit will speak to us has
given us a lonely faith, full of head-knowledge but very little relation-
ship. Perhaps it’s even one of the failings that has pushed so many
people to spiritualism rather than Christianity. People don’t want the
dry version of faith they see in many churches; they want an interactive,
personal God.
They want to know and be known by the God who sees and cares
for each of us individually (Genesis 16:13).
