“This is what the Lord says: ‘Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; then you will find a resting place for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’’”

—Jeremiah 6:16

Many of us wish God would point us in a direction.

But there’s a good way he has already mapped out in his Word, and so often, we say, “I will not walk in it.”

“I won’t give up this sin. I won’t stop building my own kingdom. I will continue to trust in or seek riches. I can’t trust you in these circumstances; I must continue trying to pursue my own desires. I will not put you first in my life, Lord.”

Often, we resist because we don’t believe God will give us what we want. But as we walk his good way, our wants are transformed. We find he gives us the grace and tools to be content in some circumstance we once found unbearable, even if the situation itself is unchanged.

Or perhaps we resist because we want practical steps instead of vague precepts—straightforward answers on what to study, where to work, where to live, or how to parent. As we walk the Lord’s path, his direction in even these things becomes increasingly clear as we submit to the Holy Spirit.

The rest for our souls appears when we walk in his good way. When we lose our lives, we find them (Matthew 10:39).

May we, like Abraham, begin to walk where the Lord directs even when we don’t know the destination (Hebrews 11:8); God will illumine all the other steps as we go.
