“Taste and see that the Lord is good; how blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!”

—Psalm 34:8

Notice that living in the Lord’s goodness and protection requires action on our part. It is not an accident or something that happens automatically. We must actively taste and intentionally look for the Lord’s goodness.

How do we taste? By eating. And we do not eat every once in a while; we eat multiple times a day. Partaking of the Word is an essential part of “tasting” who God is. The more we know of it, the more we know of him.

And knowing who God is fuels our confidence in his goodness; we begin to believe that we can trust him and take refuge in him.

We will not take refuge in a king we do not know and trust; that king might be evil or controlling.

But feeding on the Word reveals to us that the Lord is good, loving, and trustworthy. He doesn’t show favoritism, never changes, doesn’t lie, has our best in mind, and is willing to sacrifice himself for us.

This is a king we can depend on. If we know all this about him, we can trust that his laws are meant for our good and safety, not to keep us in subjection. We will be confident, then, in following his laws.

If, however, we feel uncertain of God’s character and therefore uncertain we can trust his protection, we need to spend some time feeding on the Word. The knowledge that he is good will encourage us to take refuge in him.
