“Peace I leave you, my peace I give you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, nor fearful.”

—John 14:27

The world says peace is when there are no troubles, no fears, and no struggles in our lives, but that’s not how our Lord gives peace.

He gives the peace that comes from the Holy Spirit living within us—the peace that exists even when it sees all the pain and turmoil in this life. When we trust God, we have the ability to face the difficulty, the hurt, and the suffering—we know those things are passing away. We know the end of the story and that as believers, that end is eternal joy in his presence.

He gives us the peace that comes from knowing he will use all things for good when we are following him, even if the thing itself is terrible (Romans 8:28).

He gives the peace that passes understanding (Philippians 4:7) when the sufferings of this world come, because we know that our suffering here does not even tip the scales against the eternal weight of glory (2 Corinthians 4:17).

And as one of the fruits of the Spirit, he gives the internal peace that no law or power in this world can take from us (Galatians 5:22).

The world’s peace is a roller–coaster dependent upon circumstance, our moods, and the shifting opinions of society. The Lord’s peace is constant and steady, a solid thing, immovable, because it comes from him and depends on him. It is the unchanging constant throughout the course of time (Hebrews 13:8) and the only firm foundation (Matthew 7:24–25).
