“He will not cry out nor raise his voice, nor make his voice heard in the street.”

—Isaiah 42:2

The loudest people seem to get the most attention. Those who yell and argue are taken to be the most passionate and maybe even the smartest or most well-equipped.

But that isn’t the case. This prophetic passage about Jesus reminds us that he didn’t think it necessary to share truth by being the loudest or the most aggressive.

He shared it quietly, patiently, and intimately. He shared it humbly.

It’s human nature to gather around hype, but Jesus didn’t aim for hype; he aimed for love, truth, and relationship.

When hype is the main tool, we need to listen to the message behind it carefully. Is it trying to win us over with simple excitement? Is it reflecting truth, hope, and love? Is it calling us to things that will grow us in healthy ways, or is it asking something worldly of us? Is the messenger making disciples or peddling a product? Is it biblical? Does it carry within it the fruit of the Spirit, or is it fueling earthly desire, impatience, fear, or quick action?

We live in a world susceptible to excitement, and we like quick–fixes and short–term rewards—two things hype is often good at promising.

The Lord is often the still, small voice that says to wait, hope, and rest. Let’s be certain our ears are open so we can hear his voice above the noise of the world that yells, “Act now!” and “Don’t miss out!” and makes promises it cannot keep.
