“This is what the Lord says: ‘Let no wise man boast of his wisdom, nor let the mighty man boast of his might, nor a rich man boast of his riches; but let the one who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who exercises mercy, justice, and righteousness on the earth; for I delight in these things,’ declares the Lord.”
—Jeremiah 9:23–24
All of us live and work to build something we can be proud of. Whether we open our mouths to boast or not, how we live reveals what we long to boast about.
Do our actions reveal that our pride and value are placed on our intellect, worldly wisdom, our abilities, our physical strength, our position in society or the workplace, or our worldly goods and wealth?
Do we bask in the approval garnered by these things? Are they what we hope people see when they look at us?
If so, we’re missing the point.
Second Corinthians 4:18 says, “For the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
Our knowledge of God leads us to live in the eternal unseen. It means that whether we eat or drink or work or raise children or cut lawns or clean toilets, we do all to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31).
Our earthly advantages or disadvantages do not affect our self–worth either for good or for bad because we boast only in whether we know the Lord and he knows us.
