“And now says the Lord, who formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, so that Israel might be gathered to him (for I am honored in the sight of the Lord and my God is my strength). He says, ‘It is too small a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the protected ones of Israel; I will also make you a light of the nations so that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.’”
—Isaiah 49:5–6
In this prophetic passage about Jesus, God says that reconciling only Israel to himself is “too small.” He’s going to make a way for all nations to come to him. His true purpose is bigger.
Don’t we sometimes look at what God has called us to do and think, “That’s too big for me”? We may try to back out like Moses (Exodus 4:10–13) or ask for multiple reassurances like Gideon (Judges 6:36–40). The task already seems impossible. And then God says, “Oh, not only that. Think bigger.”
God sent Jesus not only for the Israelites, but for all mankind. God had Moses not only lead the Israelites out of Egypt, but straight through the Red Sea on dry land. God not only defeated the Midianites with the already out–numbered Israelite army; he had Gideon whittle that army down, creating humanly insurmountable odds.
When we submit to living in his service, the Lord will use us mightily in ways we could never have foreseen.
All of these are small things to him.
